Meet Clare Teeney, Chief People Officer, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust
Can you tell me about your background and what led you to pursue a career in the NHS?
I have worked in the NHS for 14 years. I enjoy working in environments where people provide the services and the services provided make a difference to other peoples lives. Our health is a very precious thing and to working in the NHS is a reminder of that. It is a privilege to work with incredible people who care for others and dedicate their lives to improve those of other people.
What does a typical day look like for you in your current role?

Professional questions:
What are the most rewarding aspects of your job?
Creating change and making improvements so that UHL improves as a place to work for the colleagues who work here.
What are the biggest challenges you face in your role?
Like many people the job I do is very busy.
How do you manage work-life balance given the demands of your job?
I like to get up early and exercise. I make fresh juice and freeze it so that there is something healthy to drink. I try to make sure I get enough sleep.
Can you share a memorable experience or patient interaction that had a significant impact on you?
We work with local colleagues, community groups and other organisations such as the Kings Trust. This work involves supporting young people into placements to develop their life skills and confidence. It often provides people with their first experience of being in a working environment. Through these placements many young people either go on to enter paid work and employment or to further their education. Seeing the positive impact these placements have on young people and how they change their lives and open up opportunities has had a significant impact on me.
How has the NHS changed since you first started working here?
The hospitals have got busier. There have been advancements in technology and in lots of ways it hasn’t changed too much.

There are so many different careers you can have in the NHS it is a place where you can realise your potential and make a difference to people.
